ExxonMobil Hears from Co-op America Members at Annual Meeting
At ExxonMobil’s annual shareholders’ meeting on May
30 in Dallas, Texas, Social Investment Forum/Co-op America media
coordinator Kate Rosow represented the demands of thousands of SIF
and Co-op America members who are calling for Exxon to invest in
renewable energy now.
“It’s time for ExxonMobil to wake up to how destructive
pollution from fossil fuels is to our environment,” says Rosow.
“Shareholders understand that the future of the company and
the health of the planet both depend on a shift away from fossil
fuels toward renewable energy.”
In other actions, Exxon officials said it was the first time in
company’s history that a resolution had been adopted over
the objections of the company, passing with 52.2 percent of shares
voting requiring directors to get a majority, not a plurality, of
the votes to win a spot on board. According to CEO, Rex W. Tillerson,
“I think there’s unhappiness over how former CEO Raymond’s
compensation package was handled.”
The shareholder resolutions that focused on board governance, are
in the wake of Lee Raymond’s final-year pay package of $69.4
million and retirement lump sum of $98.4 million.
In reaction to the shareholder resolutions on global warming, climate
change and alternative fuels, Tillerson, was combative with his
critics. Energy Secretary Samuel W. Bodman, California Employees’
Retirement System and Sierra Club voiced criticism that Exxon is
doing too little to develop alternatives to petroleum.

Global
Warming: coming to a theater near you
Last week, Co-op America, together with our partners at Solar Nation, hosted a special screening of Al Gore's new movie, "An Inconvenient Truth", as part of our ongoing efforts to reach people and raise awareness about global warming and the solutions. The National Green Pages was given to all the celebrities that attended the Hollywood premiere of the movie. CABN member, Native Energy provided the carbon offsets making the film the first carbon-neutral documentary ever.
Co-op
America Quarterly: Forests—Situation Critical
An astounding 42 percent of the world's industrial wood harvest
goes into making paper. We're cutting down trees that take years
to grow for one-time uses such as paper towels and napkins. Or for
catalogs and magazines - nearly all of which are trashed within
a year. In the U.S. alone, we print over 12 billion magazines every
year; 95% of them on virgin paper.
Our most recent edition of the Co-op America Quarterly is hot of
the presses and looks at what consumers and businesses can do to
save the world's forests. And it is printed on 100% recycled paper
with a minimum of 60% post consumer recycled content.

Co-op America’s Fair Trade Alliance Helps Educators and Students
Kim Jalet, a Co-op America Fair Trade Alliance member and Connecticut-based
teacher , tells Co-op America she’s been using materials supplied
by the Fair Trade Alliance to help her high school students understand
the role of Fair Trade in the economy as part of an annual “civic-minded”
project.
“One group of students wants to convince the school to offer
a Fair Trade chocolate bar,” reports Jalet. “The second
group plans to meet with a local supermarket, and a third will produce
a Fair Trade brochure for others to use.”
Jalet says the Co-op America resources made it easy to quickly launch
the program with her students.
