Elle Magazine Goes Green
The first “green” issue of Elle magazine
hits newsstands in April, just in time to coincide with Earth Day
2006. Printed entirely on recycled paper and underwritten through
a sponsorship with Co-op America Business Member Aveda
,
the issue is devoted to the subject of the environment.
“With the Green Issue, Elle is scoring two more fashion firsts: We are the first fashion magazine to devote an entire issue to the environment and the first to print that entire issue, including the fashion well, on recycled paper,” said Carol Smith, Elle’s senior vice president. “The response from our advertisers has been absolutely inspiring; the Green Issue is a perfect example of the right idea at the right time.”
Environmental activist Laurie David, founder of the “Stop Global Warming Virtual March” and NRDC trustee was the quest editor of this first Green Issue.
The Stop Global Warming March was founded by Laurie David, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., and Senator John McCain as a nonpolitical effort to bring all Americans together to confront global warming.

Timberland Launches New Label Initiative
The Timberland Co. introduces new packaging, reporting the name
and location of the factory where shoes are produced and the amount
of energy required to make them. Additional messages on the box
will encourage customers to reuse or recycle it; the box itself
is produced from 100 percent post-consumer recycled waste fiber.
(Sweatshop-free retailer No Sweat Apparel has also included similar
point-of-origin labeling in its shoes since its inception.)

Sweden Plans to be Oil-Free within 15 Years
Because of concerns with global warming and a forecasted peak in oil supplies, Sweden has announced the biggest renewable energy step of any Western economy, in its stated attempt to wean the entire country from oil by 2020.
“There will always be better alternatives to oil,” Sweden’s sustainable development minister Mona Sahlin told the Guardian. “No house should need oil for heating, and no driver should need to turn to gasoline.”
Study Shows that Sabbatical Benefits Outweigh Costs
A recent study by the Journal of Education for Business found that the benefits of sabbaticals outweigh their costs when employers and employees agree on their expectations for the leave. The study found that employees return more committed and energized, remain loyal to their employer, and allow employees left behind to grow in their absence.
