If you want to green your food choices ….
1. Buy Organic When Possible. Organic foods are better for your health and choosing to buy organic foods helps to encourage businesses to invest more in organics. Support green businesses offering organic foods.
2. Buy Fair Trade Foods. This growing category of foods includes coffee, tea, bananas, rice, mangoes, pineapples, chocolate, nuts, olive oil and more. Find Fair Trade foods in the National Green Pages™.
3.Join a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) project. A CSA is a farm that creates direct relationships with consumers by selling a “share” of its harvest to its members or subscribers. Farms find the markets they need to stay afloat and consumers get weekly or biweekly baskets of fresh, seasonal produce. Check out Local Harvest to find a CSA near you.
4. Grow Your Own. Start a garden in your yard or on your balcony or patio in containers. Be sure to invest in organic seeds and soil.
5. Make Your Own. Americans increasingly rely on pre-made foods for their daily meals. By making your own meals at home you can better control portion size, ingredients, and you can avoid excess packaging and waste. Invest in a cook book today.
