Turn up the heat on TXU
With the effects of global warming becoming clearer each day, more and more energy companies are taking action to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions and explore renewable energy. However, one Texas company is working to undo the progress that is being made.
TXU, the biggest utility in Texas, is planning to build 11 new coal-fired power plants in Texas. Together, these plants will produce 78 million tons of CO2 per year, which is:
— Equal to the annual emissions of 14 million passenger cars
— More than two-and-a-half times more CO2 than California will prevent with its groundbreaking emissions reduction program for vehicles
— Larger than the emissions of many entire countries, including Denmark, Portugal, and Sweden.
In addition, according to Environmental Defense, TXU has told its shareholders that once it has built 11 coal-fired plants in Texas it is planning to move into Pennsylvania and Virginia.
Co-op America is partnering with Environmental Defense to oppose TXU’s plans. TXU’s CEO John Wilder needs to hear from consumers that coal is the wrong direction for Texas, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and the country.

As a resident of a state impacted by TXU for new coal plants and as a power consumer, I strongly urge you to halt your plans to build 11 new pulverized-coal power plants in Texas, and any additional plants in Pennsylvania and Virginia. The Texas plants alone will emit more CO2 than many countries and 21 different states. By building these plants, you will undermine the efforts of other states across the nation to reduce carbon emissions and fight global warming.
Texas is already the nation's largest carbon dioxide polluter and TXU's plans will make this dramatically worse.
Research increasingly demonstrates that the best approach to providing clean, safe, and secure energy in this country, while protecting the environment, is to invest in increased conservation and renewable energy sources
I urge you to halt your plans to build these plants and to consider affordable, available technology to reduce TXU's contribution to the global warming crisis.
Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
